In 2021, Green's Football program astonished everyone with an improbable post-season run, ultimately conquering Massillon Washington in the regional final. WR/DB Trey Martin, a name now inseparable from Green's football legacy, was at the heart of this incredible season. Yet, would you believe that there was a time when Trey harbored a deep dislike for football, going so far as to quit the sport altogether? He once believed basketball held his true calling. Though as we know now, football was the way to go. Trey's unwavering passion for football altered the course of his life and revealed that, all along, football was the perfect path for him.
Taking cues from his older brother, Kaleb, Trey initially dabbled in baseball during his early years. However, his love for baseball quickly dwindled due to the discomfort of frequently jamming his fingers in the glove. It was actually on the basketball court that he discovered his true passion. He never intended to play football seriously, always believing that basketball would be the sport he pursued. Motivated to excel in basketball, Trey went on to letter all four years and started three years as a key player.
Trey only played football as a means to keep himself busy. At first, Trey's experience with high school football was not dreadful, but it didn't ignite a fire within him. It was during his sophomore year when everything changed. He began to embrace the game's intensity, and as he evolved as a player, he realized he had exceptional athletic talent.
The team's performance steadily improved as the seasons passed, going from 2-8 to a more respectable 5-5 record. Trey's influence became increasingly evident both on and off the field. He became a natural leader, inspiring his teammates to give their best effort. His dedication and work ethic set an example for everyone around him, motivating them to strive for excellence.
The pinnacle of Trey's transformation came during that remarkable 2021 season when Green's Football program made an improbable run, resulting in a triumph over Massillon Washington in the regional final. It was a defining moment for Trey and his team—a validation of their hard work and resilience.
During that remarkable 2021 season, Trey's outstanding performance earned him numerous well-deserved awards. However to him, he was shocked when he received the news. Having missed three regular-season games, Trey focused on the team's success rather than individual accolades. When Coach Geis sent him a screenshot of the awards while he was in class, Trey tried to hold back his emotions, but his mind couldn't help but race. The recognition was undoubtedly an honor, but his heart remained dedicated to the team's achievements and the camaraderie that fueled their triumph.

One standout moment for Trey is the Louisville game during his senior year. Coming off of an injury, Trey had his little brother Antonio throw him a touchdown. Antonio lined up on the opposite side, setting up a fake run. Meanwhile, Trey pretended to block for a few seconds before breaking free. It was a perfectly timed moment. In an instant, Antonio threw the touchdown pass, spiraling through the air like a symbol of the bond between the brothers.

Football may have been Trey's dominant focus throughout his high school career, but his basketball journey was equally remarkable. Being on the same roster as his older brother, Kaleb, during his freshman season was a unique experience that ignited a passion for the sport. Witnessing Kaleb's dedication and teamwork inspired Trey to elevate his game. Despite the challenge of choosing between the two sports he loves, Trey's defensive prowess and ability to play beyond his size showcased his versatility as a truly exceptional athlete.
As he navigates life after high school, Trey has set his sights on being an All-Conference college player and achieving further victories. His college football journey began with several offers from notable institutions like Lake Erie College, Walsh, Butler, and others. While he ultimately chose Ashland University, playing for the team meant being far away from his friends, leading him to transfer to Walsh University, where he could reconnect with his trusted teammate, Trevor Vanhorn. This decision was driven by a love for the game that could not be suppressed, even during moments of uncertainty and change.
Trey's family has been his unwavering motivation and support through it all. His coaches played a significant role in molding him into the player and person he is today, instilling accountability and pushing him to reach his full potential. From the toll on his body to challenges on the football field, Trey's relationship with his teammates and their constructive criticism motivated him to strive for greatness.
Reflecting on his journey, Trey remarked,
"It was a testimony of progression and hard work. If you look at it from quitting, to going 2-8, to going 5-5, to winning a regional final," he further added, "It was a defining moment for me and the team – a validation of our hard work and resilience."
Trey's story is a profound reminder that success is not always a straightforward path. As he reflects on his remarkable transformation, Trey's words resonate with the essence of overcoming doubt and mental challenges. From facing initial struggles and self-doubt that led him to quit, to the uphill battle of a 2-8 record, he never allowed setbacks to define him. Instead, he embraced hard work and unwavering belief in himself and his team, rising above adversity.
